    Delve into the ancient streets of Sulmona, birthplace of the Roman poet Ovid. See the aqueduct on Piazza Garibaldi and step into the cool interior of the Church of Santa Maria Annunziata with its majestic belltower. The town is most famous for the Italian confectionery known as 'confetti'; these sugar coated almonds are traditionally given to friends and relatives at weddings and other special occasions. Visit a local factory where sampling these sweet gems will probably prove irresistible.

  • Abruzzo National Park And Pescocostanzo - 2 to 4

    Discover the magnificence of the Abruzzo National Park on a scenic drive through its huge forests. The endangered species that thrive in this wooded landscape include Marsian bears, wolves and Apennine lynx. You'll be incredibly lucky if you catch even a glimpse of one of these elusive inhabitannts. In the charming little town of Pescocostanzo, you'll be free to expolre at your own pace. Perhaps enjoy a refreshing cup of coffee in one of the quaint little cafés or walk up to the ruins of Castel Mancino for splendid views across the surrounding hills.

    Travel through vineyards to the hilltop village of Pacentro. indulge in a tasting of the local wines, Montepulciano is one of the best known reds, and you'll also be able to sample local cheeses and other typical produce.

  • Scanno And Villalago - 2 to 4

    Explore the ancient village of Scanno, where many of the older women still wear traditional costume. There is an air of the orient here, some inhabitants can trace their ancestry back to Asia Minor and this history is reflected in the elaborate designs of the fine filigree jewellery which is still made by local artisans. Villalago clings on to a wooded rocky spur which juts into Lago di Scanno. Discover narrow lanes and stairways which lead to tiny squares and the ruins of ancient towers in this atmospheric village. It has to be said that Lago di Scanno and Lago di San Domenico, hidden away in the mountains, are true oases of beauty and tranquillity.
